If you are already in a mediation process, you may benefit from personal legal counseling outside of your sessions from a mediation-friendly attorney. In my capacity as a consulting/review attorney, I would provide you with legal context and advice, brainstorm options, and ensure that your financial and emotional interests and needs are addressed. A consulting /review attorney is recommended at any point in the mediation process, but is critical once a draft agreement is circulated and before it is signed to ensure that it is legally sound, was based on informed decisions, and represents your understanding. If your mediator is not an attorney, I could also formalize the agreement and file the necessary documents in court.
